Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
