Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
